Connective Tissue Massage
About this treatment
Where the body holds its deepest tension
Not all pain lives in the muscles. Some of it is held in the connective tissue — the fascia, the skin, the fine web of tissue that wraps every structure in your body and links your surface to your depth. Connective tissue massage, originally developed by German physiotherapist Elisabeth Dicke in the 1920s and 30s, works directly with this system through a precise reflex technique that is unlike anything in conventional massage.
The strokes are light but specific: a gentle pulling, dragging or scratching sensation applied to particular skin zones — called dermatomes — that share embryological and neurological connections with internal organs and deeper body structures. What you feel on the surface creates a cascade of change within. This is not a treatment you drift through; you will feel it, and the effects often continue unfolding for hours or days after your session.
I trained specifically in this technique as part of my advanced bodywork education. It requires precision, knowledge of the fascial map, and a great deal of sensitivity. When it is applied well, it can reach places that direct pressure simply cannot.

What happens during your Connective Tissue Massage?
We begin with a brief intake conversation to understand your history, your symptoms, and what your body has been carrying. This is important with connective tissue work — because the technique is reflex-based, I need to understand which zones are relevant to your situation. You will typically be seated or lying, with access to the back and sides of your torso, where most of the key reflex zones are located. I work with very specific strokes — not broad sweeping movements, but precise lines and curves that follow the fascial pathways. The sensation is distinctive: many clients describe it as a light scratching or pulling that feels surprisingly intense for how gentle the touch is. That intensity is the nervous system responding exactly as it should.
Sessions are often shorter and more focused than a full-body relaxation massage — sometimes 30 to 45 minutes of concentrated work is more powerful than an hour of broader technique. You may feel a deep shift during the session, and the reflex effects continue to integrate afterward. Some clients notice warmth, tingling, improved digestion, or a sense of something having released — even in areas that were not directly touched.
Is this treatment right for you?
Connective tissue massage is particularly valuable for chronic, complex pain that has not responded well to conventional treatment — including fibromyalgia, chronic back and neck pain, migraine, sciatica, poor circulation, and digestive complaints rooted in fascial tension. It works beautifully alongside Manual Lymphatic Drainage for systemic support, with Deep Tissue Massage for structural release, or as a complement to Psoas Release when the hip-lower back connection needs attention. For broader fascial and neuromuscular work, Muscle and Fascia Therapy is another powerful pairing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is a Connective Tissue Massage?
A Connective Tissue Massage focuses on the fascia — the layered web of connective tissue that surrounds and supports every muscle, joint, and organ in your body. Using slow, precise techniques including skin rolling, cross-fiber friction, and deep strokes, your therapist works to release restrictions and adhesions in this tissue. It’s a therapeutic, results-oriented treatment that addresses the root cause of many common tension and mobility complaints.
How long is the session and what does it cost?
Sessions are available in different durations depending on your needs and the areas being treated. Please check our current pricing page for full details on session lengths and rates. We recommend booking at least 60 minutes to allow adequate time to address key areas thoroughly.
Is this treatment right for me?
This treatment is ideal for anyone experiencing chronic tension, restricted mobility, fibromyalgia, postural imbalances, or post-injury stiffness. It’s also a wonderful choice for active travelers who want to recover and reset during their stay. If you have any acute injuries, inflammatory conditions, or specific health concerns, we recommend discussing these with your therapist before booking so we can tailor the session appropriately.
Will it hurt? What will I feel during the session?
Connective tissue work can feel more intense than a standard relaxation massage — some strokes and techniques target areas that are genuinely restricted, which can produce a strong but productive sensation. Most guests describe it as a ‘good kind of discomfort’ that feels purposeful and deeply releasing rather than painful. Your therapist will always work within your comfort level and adjust pressure based on your feedback throughout the session.
Is this a good treatment after a day of diving or snorkeling in Bonaire?
Absolutely — in fact, it’s one of the most popular therapeutic treatments among divers visiting Bonaire. Repeated diving and water sports place specific load patterns on the neck, shoulders, hips, and lower back, and the connective tissue is often the first to show the effects. A Connective Tissue Massage helps flush those patterns out, restore mobility in over-used areas, and prepare your body for another day in the water.
How many sessions do I need to feel results?
Many guests feel a meaningful difference after a single session, particularly in terms of mobility and reduced tension. For chronic conditions or deeply ingrained patterns, a series of sessions spaced over your stay or across regular visits will yield the most lasting results. Your therapist will give you an honest assessment during your first session and recommend a plan tailored to your goals.
Can I book a same-day appointment at Massage Bonaire?
Same-day bookings are sometimes available depending on therapist schedules, but we always recommend booking in advance — especially during peak travel seasons on the island. You can book online or contact us directly in Kralendijk to check availability. Securing your spot early ensures you get the time that works best for your holiday plans.
What should I do after my session?
Hydration is key — drink plenty of water in the hours following your treatment to support the tissue as it releases and rehydrates. Some guests experience mild fatigue or warmth in treated areas, which is a normal and positive sign of the body’s response to deep connective tissue work. Rest when you can, avoid intense physical activity immediately after, and let Bonaire’s unhurried island rhythm do the rest.
